Arguably the finest campground in the Great Smokies and perhaps anywhere in America for that matter. You don't have to camp next to the river to love it. I find the loop that is across the river and a left turn past is most serene and peaceful and the campsites tend to be spread a little further apart. You are within access to a number of excellent hiking trails, including the Little River Trail and, if you are more adventurous and in good shape, the 5.8 mile Cucumber Gap Loop, which is best accessed (IMHO) by the Jakes Creek Trail. Most folks who come to Elkmont to camp are friendly, down-to-earth folks. Even when it is full, it is very quiet. If you love camping at all, you will love this place. Also, the river is great for tubing in the summer and early fall. Spring, it runs a little too fast.
Beautiful campground, we tented right next to the river, heard the water rushing over the rocks all night. Just awesome. We met a lot of friendly people. Price is a bit high, but it is One of the only charges in the National park.
